Dextrin

Introduction:

Dextrins are degradation products obtained by treating starch under carefully controlled conditions. Dextrins are made by heating starch in dry form with small amounts of catalyst.

White Dextrin has an appearance of the native starch and has solubility varying from 25-80%. It forms a soft, light coloured gel on cooling. Yellow Dextrin ranges in colour from pale yellow to dark brown and has high water solubility. It is used to produce high solid concentration pastes.

Applications:

  1. Dextrin does not react with Chemicals. It is very useful and plays an important role in various Industries.

  2. Textile Industries: In textile printing Dextrin is used as a thickener. Copper rolls get long life with sizing and it increases adhesiveness in finishing. It also gives the desired feel to fabric.

  3. Dyes: Dextrin is used in the Dyestuff industry as extenders.

  4. Pharmaceuticals: Dextrin is used as a nutrient source in preparations of certain antibiotics.

  5. Foundries: For good care binding as a binder, it imparts great compressive strength. To give good strength to moulds and to prevent deformation of the core as it does not make the core too dense. So there are no trapped gases, which causes blowholes.

  6. Dry Distemper : Dextrin is largely used in dry distemper. 2 to 3 % of Dextrin with chalk and pigments act as a carrier and impart good adhesiveness of colour to the wall.

  7. Grinding Wheel: Binder for different constituents for grinding wheel. Dextrin is also used as binder for water colour, mineral aggregates, ink /colour binder, laminates, fibers paper bags & boxes, paper tubes and cones, postage stamp, gum tape, fireworks, cigarettes, crayons, polishing dyes, leather linoleum, wall paper in silvering compounds and so many other industries use dextrin.
